Woodland Trust: 49% Garden

Between 1850 and the present day, we’ve lost 49% of ‘Trees outside woods’, owing in large part to Dutch elm disease and ash dieback. This garden aims to highlight the efforts being made to address this issue through the Woodland Trust’s UK and Ireland Sourced and Grown (UKISG) scheme, which encourages everyone to plant UK-grown trees.

The designer hopes that, through this space, visitors will be encouraged to plant native and UK-grown trees, and diversify the species planted to help enhance resilience against both disease and our changing climate.

THE PROCESS of OUR WORK

The importance of biosecurity

The Woodland Trust promotes the use of UK grown trees, emphasising the vital role of biosecurity in maintaining tree health. Through its UK and Ireland Sourced and Grown (UKISG) scheme, the Trust provides buyers with the confidence that they are buying trees that have been grown in the UK for their entire life.

Design Style & Inspiration

We’ve drawn inspiration from the contrast between the repetitive forms of straight conifer trunks and the sculptural qualities of ancient trees. For us, it’s about creating a striking juxtaposition of forms so the garden will offer a different perspective depending on where you view it from. Since the site is on the smaller side, we’ll be using mirror to create the illusion of an endless, expansive woodland.
